Communications Internship Opportunity at Mapungubwe Institute. Closing date: 8 February 2013. South Africa. The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) is an independent research institute dedicated to research and reflection that seeks to advance South Africa’s development. 

Through research and strategic reflection, MISTRA endeavours to address the complex challenges that straddle issues of nation-formation, economic growth, social equity, science and technology and South Africa’s positioning in a globalised world. MISTRA’s founders and staff comprise South Africans with a background in research, academia, policy-making and governance.

MISTRA has an intern programme which is designed to provide young graduates with work experience. We have a vacancy for a Communications Intern to support the Media and Communications department.

Skills and Qualifications:

The candidate for this internship must have: 
•- BA or Honours in Journalism or Communications
•- Strong communication and writing skills
•- Experience in writing and research
•- A solid understanding of and enjoyment of social media platforms
•- Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, – - -Access, and mail merges
•- Familiarity with digital photography
•- Familiarity with print and electronic media environment in South Africa
•- Strong people skills
•- Strong planning and organisational skills

•- Excellent command of English, both written and conversational
•- Energetic, extroverted and a team player willing to muck in
•- Ability to function and produce under pressure
•- An interest in local and international news and politics

•- Attention to detail, efficient, organised and able to meet deadlines
•- Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision
•- Code 8 Drivers license
•- A self-starter, with a can-do mindset

•- A valid driver’s license.

•- Support the Head of Communications in all media and communications related activities
•- Provide media and communications support to the research section of the Institute
•- Write articles and media releases on the work of the Institute
•- Develop and maintain a broad database of contacts within the media, research and academic sectors
•- Update and maintain the Institute’s website and other internal electronic platforms
•- Develop and oversee the Institute’s social networking platforms
•- Develop implementation plans for social media and online communication strategies
•- Liaise with media and manage media relations at MISTRA events
•- Participate in events management and provide logistical support for events
•- Write reports on MISTRA’s research related events, ensure accurate documenting of participants at MISTRA events.
•- Monitor print and electronic media for reportage on MISTRA’s research and events, and activities relating to partner organisations
•- Maintain and update database of print and electronic reportage on MISTRA’s research and events, and activities relating to partner organisations
•- Contribute to MISTRA’s monthly newsletter
•- Manage queries from the public, other research institutes, the media, and partner organisations


The monthly allowance is R5 500 cost to company, before tax. The contract period is 1 March 2013 to 28 February 2014.
