Getting some practical work experience onto your CV is critical for students who want to find jobs on graduating from university. Our internship programme is geared to provide a select number of candidates with that experience. Interns will typically be graduate or undergraduate students attached to South African universities.

On successfully passing through the application and screening process interns will sign a 3-month to 1-year internship agreement with the IRR setting out their roles and responsibilities.

No two internship agreements are alike as we tend to build the internship around your unique strengths and interests. Typically interns will be required to spend a certain amount of time within the IRR offices in Johannesburg - this is particularly convenient for Wits and University of  Johannesburg students as our offices are situated centrally between the two universities. Students from more distant universities will work remotely with the IRR and then be required to spend vacations at our offices. Intern tasks can range from assisting our research analysts with compiling reports, helping us to run events, working on social media and public relations campaigns, supporting our sales and marketing teams, and assisting with various administrative responsibilities.

The application process is simple. Send us your recently published article on any aspect of South African policy and if we like it, and think its reflects liberal and market friendly thinking, we will invite you to an interview. In the interview process we will find out more about you and perhaps set some writing and analytical tests. If you make it through the tests we will offer you an internship agreement.

Our internships are never paid. They are a learning experience that will see our staff invest a lot of effort in helping you get the practical experience to go with your academic qualifications. On successful completion of your internship we will provide you with a letter of reference. This will set out what your tasks were and how we rated your performance. A sound letter of reference should be very useful in your post-graduation job search.
