Safety Officer: Mining (CU)

A vacancy has arisen for a Safety Officer, who will report to the Chief Safety Officer.

Applicants must be in possession of a valid Blasting Certificate or Trade Certificate, recognised safety qualifications - COMSOC 1 and 2 or equivalent and recognised HIRAC course. A National Diploma in SHEQ and experience in opencast mining would be advantageous, while a minimum of 3 years’ underground experience and sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act are essential. A valid driver’s licence (Code 08), computer literacy (MS Office suite) as well as good verbal and written communication skills are further requirements. The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain a certificate of fitness to work in underground mines.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Safety Officer’s inspections and make recommendations to management
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents
  • Report to the Manager or Engineer on all formal accidents and incidents that were investigated
  • Attend health and safety meetings and make recommendations to management
  • Prepare safety presentations and present the same if and when required
  • Manage accident/incident recording systems and safety statistics
  • Identify workplaces and machinery which may represent critical areas “HOT spots” regarding health and safety
  • Ensure that all employees are properly trained regarding Health and Safety, liaise with the training department and assist with needs analysis
  • Inspect workplaces and machinery at intervals as determined
  • Attend departmental meetings and assist where possible
  • Initiate and participate risk assessment activities
  • Assist with drafting and reviewing relevant SOPs
  • Be responsible for special instructions and COPs
  • Perform any task requiring specific expertise as may be identified by senior management.

Two Rivers Platinum offers a competitive remuneration package and conditions of employment will be based on the “Total Package” concept. The mine’s housing complex is situated in Lydenburg.

The successful candidates will be appointed on the condition of being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29/1996. Applicants must be prepared to undergo certain job-related assessments, if required, and a panel interview as part of the selection process. Credit, criminal and reference checks may be done by the Mine if deemed necessary.
